The Historical Miniatures Chinese Boxer kit from the boxer rebellion during China late Qing dynasty comes from my grey army. I purchased the kit back in the late eighties or early nineties. The white metals parts are tarnished due to ageing (no lead disease). There are two versions for this figure kit. For the first released, the figure pigtail was cast separate and extended all the way which ends at the upper thigh. For the second released the pigtail ends at the waist. This review is for the second release.

Here are the cast parts, historical notes and painting guide.

Final thoughts

The Chinese Boxer was sculpted by Mike Good back in 1985.

The figure was beautifully sculpted especially with a nice face and anatomy correct. A superb figure for your collection.

The following quote was by Mike himself in 2015 about this particular figure:

“Talk about ancient history: this was the very first figure I ever sculpted ca. 1985. Yes, you read that right. This kit was originally sold by a company whose name now escapes me. It did not last long and I eventually sold it under my own brand, Historical Miniatures. That did not last long either.

I painted the original master and sold it to a collector. Back in those days I always painted the masters. No real chance of this being reproduced since only castings remain and even these are rare as hen's teeth. I have had thoughts on producing a new version of this subject. But given the weakness of the figure market these days, I do not see this as a viable plan. Sorry.

Good luck finding one! Even I do not have one of these......”

Beware of recast

Saw one on evilbay some years ago. Figure was cast in white resin and polearm looks like in white metal. I have never seen a resin casting before. There were only two releases that I known of and confirmed by Mike Good. Both were in white metal in the eighties and package in brown carton box same packaging as those from Series 77.  May be this was a re-release or a recast in a white box. Also I saw one which was produced and sold as a painted version from China. So buyer bewares.
